UNA ANECDOTA DE PANDEMIA

07-11-2020

https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/6197920_114-rare-marklin-fidelitas-clown-car-train

https://www.antiquestradegazette.com/news/2009/maerklin-tops-kaufman-sale-in-new-jersey/

https://www.antiquesandthearts.com/kaufman-toy-collection-sets-records-at-bertoia-auctions/

A pandemic story

Last October in Argentina surely will be unforgettable.

In a general depressed context, with sales down, relatives and friends seeing how their incomes were reduced, and living in a country without compass and diary devaluation, arise this story which I want to tell you.

Everything started with an incoming WhatApp message on the Maxifun website.  That message was from a person who wanted to sell a tinplate toy item. He thought it was a Märklin item from Germany.

Also he said that he knows it was rare and expensive, but he preferred to sell it in our country with a lower price. Up to here all normal. I'm usually interested in old toys, so this case wasn´t an exception.

The mentioned toy was a clockwork tinplate train with wagons, with a clown on each piece.

The first step was search in Google and we found this:

https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/6197920_114-rare-marklin-fidelitas-clown-car-train

We found that the toy Märklin Fidelitas was manufactured in 1909, around 111 years old!!!

My astonishment was bigger when we found that a similar piece was sold in auction of the collection of Mr. Kaufman in New Jersey, USA, and it was paid near U$D 90.000!!!

You could check up this information here:

https://www.antiquestradegazette.com/news/2009/maerklin-tops-kaufman-sale-in-new-jersey/

https://www.antiquesandthearts.com/kaufman-toy-collection-sets-records-at-bertoia-auctions/

Also I noted that Märklin Fidelitas train is ranked #17 in a list of most valuable toys sold in auctions in the world. From the first twenty most valuable, ten are from Märklin, just to give you an idea of how prestigious this brand is in toys world.

Well, up to here, such a surprise!

The first step was to contact the seller in order to see the toy, take pictures and be sure that it was an original piece. With such high value pretended, it could have been possible that somebody wanted to cheat me. The seller received me in his home so I could take pictures, touch it, see it at detail and check its clockwork. Only a clown head was not original.

Next step was to make an offer under my possibilities. I thought about it and put myself a limit so I would resign to purchase the toy if a higher value was pretended. If the limit was surpassed, I would have had to search for a serious customer to offer it and get a small difference in the sell.

My offer was short. The seller phoned me the day after and told me he had a much better offer from United States and his idea was to ship the toy and sell it there. I wasn´t disappointed, but I remember feeling a sense of resignation. I couldn't handle this situation with such an expensive toy.  It was out of my possibilities, felling like I was out of my league.

I told him that I was glad he had a way to sell it more expensive altough. Imagine if I bought the toy and two days after he received that much superior offer. Businesses are businesses, but that would have been a really hurtful situation for the seller.

But this story is far from over! Two days later I was talking with a customer and this situation came up: "See what happened this week in our shop", so I proceeded to told him the story about this fascinating very expensive toy that I couldn't get the chance to acquire it.  “This was like a pretty woman that you fall in love, then she's gone and you think it was like a dream, very perfect to be true" (my colleagues laughed out loud). My customer answered me: "Try to avoid making those comments to your wife (hahaha).

My face was transformed when he asked me if the toy was already shipped and sold. My experience anticipated what he was going to say:  "If not, I would like to make an offer for the toy". After I said goodbye to my customer, I picked up the phone and called the seller, I told the offer he wanted to make for it. For me, it was not only important the purchase by itself, but also the piece of history and the important fact that the toy would remain in Argentina, in hands of an Argentinean true collector.

The amount's offer did not reach the offer from the US, but was considerably much more than I was able to pay for it. Only I will say that offer was in US dollars and it had four zeros. The buyer gave me the money without even seeing the toy previously, only by photos. Can´t believe such trust deposited in my hands!

For the collector, this is the most valuable item he has ever bought. For the seller, it was his best sell.

Finally the toy remained in Argentina, and the transaction was successful.

I only officiated as a simple mediator. Both sides are happy and I didn´t get a commission at all for getting them both in touch. Due to my line of business, it is unforgivable that I did not get a cut at all, but this was a special occasion.... May be next time.

What goes around, it comes around. Today this toy rests in hands of a collector who really appreciates it, and perhaps tomorrow I would get an equally profitable business opportunity.

I hope you enjoyed this story.
